Even Minister Byron Camilleri Is Now Criticising Police For Arresting Andre Callus

The outrage against Andre Callus’ arrest has been so widespread that even the minister in charge of the police has criticised it.

“I refer to what just happened in Mosta,” Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said. “I will be clear. As Home Affairs Minister, everyone has the right to protest peacefully and no one, not even the police, can hinder that right.”

Callus was arrested after he tried to knock down a barrier that workers had erected around the ongoing tree felling works at the Mosta piazza. He was dragged to the Mosta police station and released shortly afterwards.

Camilleri didn’t comment on whether he agrees with the felling of the trees or not. All Mosta local councillors, from both PL and PN, voted in favour of the removal of the trees as part of the Mosta piazza pedestrianisation project.
