‘Everyone Has A Right To Eat What They Want’: FKNK CEO Reacts To ‘End The Slaughter Age’ Initiative

FKNK CEO Lino Farrugia has reacted to the European Citizens Initiative request called ‘End The Slaughter Age’ approved by the European Commission.

The European Commission recently approved a request to start the European Citizens Initiative calling to switch the subsidies given to the meat industry to plant-based alternatives and cultivated meat. This in no way imposes what one should eat.

The EU petition as part of the End The Slaughter Age initiative can be signed by following this link.

“I’m going to give you a clear example of how the European Commission is influenced to impose legislation on the normal lives of European citizens,” Farrugia said while addressing an FKNK press conference.

Farrugia also went as far as describing the European Commission’s decision as an attempt to fulfil an “extremist agenda” of the sector.

“We’ve seen this happen recently through the promotion of a European law called the European Citizens Initiative, with the title, ‘End the Slaughter Age’.”

“Through this initiative, the sector will be asking for the Common Agricultural Policy subsidies to stop going towards the owners of livestock farming within the industry,” he said.

“Obviously, vegetarians and vegans probably agree with this initiative, and there’s nothing wrong there, as everyone has a right to eat whatever they want,” he said.

“However, no vegan, or vegetarian, or anyone else, has any right to impose what one should eat on others,” he said.

BirdLife Malta President and Veggy Malta coordinator Darryl Grima then reacted to Farrugia’s statement, explaining what the initiative is actually calling for.

“This European Citizen’s Initiative is asking the EU to stop funding the meat industry and instead fund plant-based alternatives and cellular agriculture,” Grima explained.

“The ECI is not telling people to stop eating meat or banning meat, but only wants the subsidies going to this polluting and cruel industry to stop!” he pointed out.

“For me, being a vegan and an environmentalist are one and the same thing. The values are interconnected. And I don’t mind if I am called an extremist for these values by hunters or politicians!” he said.
