Exclusive: I Was Terrified As A Huge Man Jumped On My Car And Smashed My Windscreen With A Bottle
It was as cab driver Rohit* was driving through Paceville – right on the corner of Triq il-Wilġa and Triq id-Dragunara – when a random man jumped onto his vehicle, brandishing a bottle at him.
“I had slowed down a bit because there’s a zebra crossing there, and I just see this guy running out of a restaurant with a bottle in his hands. I didn’t think it was anything – until he jumed on my car, jumped on my bonnet, and smashed the bottle on my windscreen before trying to open my door – but, thank God, it was locked,” Rohit told Lovin Malta hours after the incident.
“He threw the bottle at the back of my car but thank God it missed,” he continued. “He was very aggressive, he tried to chase me, but then he saw another man, I think he was Italian, and he attacked him instead. When I saw this, I opened my door and ran to safety… it was terrible.”
Police investigations are underway after a Spanish man injured three men and caused a range of damages in a violent outburst last night, with the police evening having to tase him to restrain him – but for Rohit, the fear of being hurt was just the beginning of his bad luck.
“He was so strong – three men tried to control him, but it was impossible, I don’t know what he had taken, and they couldn’t get him on the floor. And when the police arrived, they immediately went to stop him, but he was so aggressive… eventually, they were able to take him down.”
“It all happened so fast… when he jumped on my car, my heart started racing, and if the bottle had smashed in the middle, it would have shattered the screen all over me.”

But Rohit’s nightmare was just about to begin – as a self-employed cab driver, his means of earning money is out of commission, and no one, from the towing service to his insurance, want to help.
“My car is damaged, my windscreen is gone, and my car has insurance and we have pre-paid towing service – and when the towing service saw the news, they said they won’t come, and I need to pay them €50, because it’s not an accident…”
Rohit was left wondering how this violent incident could not be termed an accident.
“Imagine, now I need to pay for the towing, find a new windscreen, change the windscreen to a new car, all while work is experiencing a busy period and I’m forced to park and not work until I fix it… all this period, I will be unable to work.”
He said he asked police whether the repair costs will be covered, and was informed that the case will go to courts now.
“So now I need to repair the car myself. Who knows when I will ever get this money back?”
It is estimated that he’s sustained over €2,000 worth of damages.
“It was a terrible night, my work had just started, I am going to lose money during a profitable season,” he said.
At around 10.30pm last night, a Spanish national armed with a knife and a glass bottle, assaulted several persons on site and injured three during the confrontation, police said.
Police eventually had to tase him to apprehend him. He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further observation. As far as the three bystanders are concerned, one man – a Swiss national – was grievously injured with two Italian men were slightly injured.
