EXCLUSIVE: Shadow Minister To Face Medical Council Proceedings Over Dodgy Medical Certificates
The Shadow Health Minister is facing a formal inquiry by the Medical Council over dodgy medical certificates, following an investigation by Lovin Malta last year.
After listening to Stephen Spiteri’s version of events, the Medical Council decided to forge ahead with a formal inquiry, which could result in him being struck off the medical register. A public hearing has been set for October 15th.
Spiteri had denied wrongdoing last November after Lovin Malta published a damning telephone recording with his receptionist, who revealed details of his medical certificates racket. Anybody wanting a medical certificate was permitted to leave their details and a €5 note at a Kalkara pharmacy and pick up a signed certificate later on in the day, despite not having been examined by Spiteri.
“After receiving the information in relation to Dr Spiteri the Medical Council Malta has initiated its preliminary examination of the matter under review and has subsequently referred the matter for the necessary proceedings according to law,” the Medical Council told Lovin Malta. These proceedings refer to a full inquiry under the Health Care Professions Act.
The Nationalist Party has so far refused to take action against Spiteri, but pressure will increase now that he faces censure by the Medical Council.
A Medical Council inquiry could result in various actions listed below, including the recommendation for Spiteri to be struck off the medical register.
