A cab driver who has been suspended from his job in the face of sexual assault allegations has opened up about the fateful night that turned his life upside down.

Though the woman involved in the incident has been remanded in custody and denied bail as she faces charges for falsely accusing Vikram* of sexual assault, he’s hoping to be able to get back to work as soon as possible.

Speaking exclusively to Lovin Malta, Vikram recounted what happened after he got a notification to pick up a woman at around 3am.

“She entered the car and sat behind me, and on the way to the destination she began to start smoking a vape,” Vikram told Lovin Malta.

“I told her ‘Madam, I’m very sorry but this is not allowed, please, I respect you so please respect me and the company’s rules.”

“First she responded by saying that she’s Maltese so she has every right to, so I told her, if you don’t respect the rules, I’ll have to close the ride.”

“She turned the vape off, and soon after during the trip, she told me ‘you are a nice gentleman, very disciplined’.”

“Somewhere near Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, she asked me to stop at the side of the road, and requested to sit in the front with me.”

“I told her it’s okay if she stays in the back, but she pleaded with me to allow her to sit in the front, and she came to the front. She tried to start talking again, saying ‘I’m a good businesswoman, I am successful, but I am not happy with my husband, that is why I go out’.”

“‘I really enjoy taking to you, I want to hug you,’ she said. Then she kissed me, and asked me to go somewhere to speak a bit more and turn the car off.

“I drove to where she told me to go, and we went there and talked. And then, she kissed me, hugged me, sucked on my finger, then she told me to go to the back seat.”

“She then removed her clothes…”

“When we finished, I began to drive her home, and she asked me to play some music because she wanted to dance. When I responded, I called her madam, and she said – ‘don’t call me madam, call me Lola’.”

“I took her home. The next day, I hear that she made a complaint about me, and that I had to go to the police station.”

“I want to say thank you to the Maltese courts, I am very happy with their decision so far, I really appreciate it, and I hope their investigations reveal what happened to me.”

Lovin Malta spoke to the cab company working with Vikram, who said they are aware of the allegations and offered their full cooperation with authorities.

The court case is expected to reveal more details from the night, including GPS tracking data from the cab. Following the allegations made against him, Vikram was arrested and interrogated for 12 hours before being released without charge.

At least two witnesses are expected to testify in the case, including one person who was drinking with the woman that evening before she entered the cab.

In her defence, the accuser’s legal team denied the allegations, noting that the woman was married, and that her husband had even appeared in court to show his support for her, alongside her father. She is a company director with at least one child, a 16-year-old, her lawyers noted.
