Expanding Animal Adoption Support: Vouchers Now Available For Adopters From Animal Welfare

Animal Welfare saves many dogs that need help, and these are normally kept at the Għammieri itself, not only until they recover but also until they are adopted. This is usually a long process and unfortunately, because many of them are large dogs or bully breeds, it becomes much more difficult to find them another family.

To encourage the adoption of these dogs from the Għammieri Animal Welfare shelter, the department has begun distributing €70 vouchers to be used for veterinary care, recognising the commitment of those who have adopted. Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, highlighted this during a recent press conference.

The Adopt A Pet Allowance Scheme vouchers are part of a wider initiative to promote animal adoption and ensure the ongoing welfare of adopted pets. After a careful monitoring period, where department officials ensured that the adopted pets were well-adjusted and healthy, the voucher distribution commenced as a token of appreciation and support for the adopters. Alicia Bugeja Said underscored the importance of adopting rather than buying pets, providing a loving home to animals in need, particularly those left abandoned.

In her statements, the Parliamentary Secretary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to animal welfare, promising continued support and additional incentives for animal caretakers. “We will maintain our role as advocates for animal rights and ensure that supporters of animal welfare are rewarded through this and upcoming schemes,” Bugeja Said remarked.

Concluding the announcement, she extended gratitude to the staff of the Department for Proper Animal Treatment for their diligent efforts in the community and animal protection. Joseph John Vella, Director of the Department, echoed this sentiment and urged more people to adopt by visiting local adoption centres or navigating to the website adoptapet.gov.mt, further facilitating the adoption process and protection of abandoned animals.
