Reports that parliamentary secretaries were given a pay rise are fake, the government said today in a press statement.

“Reports broadcast on the media and reproduced by members of the Opposition about allegations that Cabinet members increased their salaries are completely false. The salaries of all Cabinet members have remained as they were since 2013,” the Department of Information statement read.

The government dismissed as “puerile” the news story that triggered the social media outrage over allegedly increased salaries. “The fake story was based on a comparison between the salaries paid out in half of 2017 with those that were given out throughout all of 2018. It seems that after this exercise, the author of the story wrongly concluded that the salary of a parliamentary secretary doubled.”

The story was shared online by MP Jason Azzopardi and former PN MEP candidate Peter Agius among others.

Politicians salaries were increased behind people’s backs during the 2008-2013 Nationalist administration sparking significant outrage and forcing the move to be rolled back in part.
