A farmer lost his life after being involved in an accident while using a mechanical plough in a field in the limits of Mġarr.

Police were informed of the incident at around 3.15pm today, with medical assistance being sent to a field in the area of Fomm ir-Riħ.

A 69-year-old farmer was found to be injured there. Members of the Civil Protection Department as well as an ambulance were called on scene and rushed the man to Mater Dei Hospital.

However, he was declared dead shortly afterward.

Magistrate Rachel Montebello has opened an inquiry into the death.
