A 79-year-old woman passed away and an 81-year-old man sustained serious injuries in a traffic accident in Lija earlier today.

The police was informed of a collision between a Renault Trafic van and a Suzuki Swift car in Triq il-Mosta around 10.30am.The van was driven by a 24-year-old man from Imtarfa, and the car was driven by an 81-year-old man from Mosta who was accompanied by a 79-year-old woman.

The Civil Protection Department as well as a medical team were called on site and ambulances transported all three people to Mater Dei Hospital to be given medical help.Unfortunately, the 79-year-old woman was certified dead not long after and the 81-year-old man was certified to be at risk of dying. The condition of the 24-year-old man is still pending.

Magistrate Ian Farrugia has been informed of the case and started the inquiry while police investigations are still ongoing.
