‘Fgajtuna!’: Protest Against Birżebbuġa Tuna Plant Stench Called For This Weekend
A number of residents and local organisations will be gathering to protest against the strong stench of tuna originating from the tuna plant in Birżebbuġa this weekend.
This comes after a meeting was held where several residents attended to voice their anger at the unbearable situation caused by the new tuna recycling plant.
Residents of the area have previously spoken to Lovin Malta to appeal for help with the situation, stressing that the smell they have to deal with on a daily basis is intolerable.
The recently announced protest is going to be held on 17th December at 10am, organised by the residents, Għaqda Storja u Kultura Birżebbuġa, and Moviment Graffitti.
During the protest, they will be calling for the plant’s operation to be suspended until the problem brought on by the insupportable smell of fish remains is resolved.
The protest will kick off from the church of Birżebbuġa, continuing on through the promenade of Wied il-Buni, finishing off in front of the boċċi club.
“This is unacceptable. Residents’ well-being and quality of life come before the tuna industry. It’s clear that this plant can no longer continue operating while leaving a strong stench of fish in the surrounding locality,” Moviment Graffitti said about the protest.
