Fgura’s Izak Catania De Giovanni, 16, Becomes Malta’s Youngest Ever Local Councillor
Newly-elected PL Fgura councillor Izak Catania De Giovanni, 16, has become the youngest ever person to sit on a Maltese local council.
He breaks the record that was set earlier this week by new PN St Julian’s councillor Gabriel Borg Ferrando, who is also 16 years old but a few months older than Catania De Giovanni.
Another newly-elected 16-year-old PN councillor, Qrendi’s Nina Briffa, is turning 17 in a few weeks’ time.

“It’s a big deal and I feel proud to be the youngest councillor,” he told Lovin Malta. “Above all, there are responsibilities attached to my role but it’s a good feeling to know I can help my community and that the people trusted me to this special role.”
He also congratulated Andre Mizzi, another 16-year-old PL Fgura council candidate who is slightly younger than him but who didn’t get elected.
“Andre has a special future ahead of him; he is dynamic, he knows how to speak to people, and he has positive political values,” he said.
Catania De Giovanni’s mother, PL MP Katya De Giovanni, said she feels emotional and honoured at her son’s new record.
“My son Izak is determined and ready to work with everyone for the benefit of the people of Fgura,” she said. “I don’t have the words to express what I’m feeling right now, but I’m honoured and grateful for the enormous trust you showed my son.”
