Malta’s drivers could soon be facing higher fines if caught using their mobile phones while driving, the Prime Minister has revealed.

While answering questions made by journalists on Monday, PM Robert Abela revealed that discussions are currently underway to significantly increase fines for those using their phones while on the road.

He continued to explain how this is one of the tactics being discussed as a response to the ever-increasing traffic accidents on the islands’ roads. 

During 2022, Malta faced an influx of fatal traffic accidents, with over 20 people having lost their lives on Malta’s roads.

Abela expressed his concern about the rising figure of road fatalities and explained how the government is currently exploring ways to make driving safer.

The current fine for using your phone while driving stands at €100, while also losing a number of points from your license.
