Fireworks Festival Will Still Take Place Tonight, Band March Cancelled Out Of Respect For Pope Francis

The Malta International Fireworks Festival is set to go ahead as planned tonight, despite global mourning following the passing of Pope Francis, who died yesterday.
In a public statement, the Malta Tourism Authority expressed its “deepest condolences and profound sorrow” at the Pope’s death, joining the international community in mourning what it described as a significant loss.

The authority confirmed that the opening night, scheduled for 22nd April, will still be held as planned.
The decision, it explained, was made after careful logistical and safety considerations, as the fireworks installations had already been set up and relocating them at this stage would pose serious safety risks to those involved.
As a sign of respect, the Tourism Authority has cancelled the band march that was intended to accompany parts of tonight’s display.
The statement also thanked the public for its understanding and solidarity, highlighting the importance of navigating the situation with sensitivity and reverence.
The event will start at 8pm in Valletta, kicking off a celebration of Malta’s fireworks tradition that will run until 3rd May.
