Five Dead After Car Drives Into Wisconsin Christmas Parade
Five people have been killed and over 40 injured after a car drove straight into a Christmas parade in the city of Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Footage posted online shows a red SUV driving through the parade at roughly 4.40pm local time, hitting a considerable number of people.
Police authorities have indicated that the incident does not as yet appear to be an act of terrorism. Rather, the SUV’s driver appears to have been trying to escape from something else before running into the parade
“The Waukesha Christmas parade was taking place when a red SUV broke through the barricades, westbound, headed down Main Street,” Police Chief Dan Thompson told reporters.
“The vehicle struck more than 20 individuals, some of the individuals were children and there were some fatalities as a result of this incident.”
Thompson said that a “person of interest” was in custody and there were no further threats to people’s safety.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said he was “praying for Waukesha tonight and all the kids, families, and community members affected by this senseless act”.
Several lawmakers and politicians have expressed their condolences, including president Joe Biden, who said he was monitoring the situation closely.
