There were over 300 reports of violent crime against old people in Malta last year, new figures have revealed.

That’s just under one every day and five every single week.

Following a parliamentary question from Hermann Schiavone, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia tabled statistics showing of the 300, the overwhelming majority were reports of either domestic violence (143) or assault (112).

Meanwhile, as of  September 2019, there have been a total of 214 violent crimes on people over 60 so far this year.

The numbers have remained relatively consistent year-on-year. However, it appears that the number of snatch and grab cases have dropped dramatically. In 2018, there were 47 such crimes, but there have only been 16 during the first nine months of the year.

The number of victims, however, was not revealed, with the Minister noting that a report could contain several victims.
