The facade of the Church of the Holy Cross in Floriana, better known as that of the Patrijiet Kapuċċini, has been restored to its former glory.

The restoration of this church, which is over 400 years old, consisted of replacing stones that had fallen or were about to fall, removing an old light as well as cleaning the stone of the existing facade.

This work was done through funds from Aġenzija Komunità Malta, in cooperation with the Malta Arts Council.

Minister Owen Bonnici said that they are committed to continue carrying out initiatives that look after the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of fortifications and historical places on a regular basis.

The inauguration was done by the Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, and by the Minister for the Interior, Security, Reforms and Equality, Byron Camilleri, in the presence of the Provincial of the Capuchin Friars, P. Ivan Scicluna.

“Thanks to the collaborations between Aġenzija Komunità Malta and the Malta Arts Council we continue to preserve historical places located which are a source of pride for the communities. This restoration safeguards important aspects of our heritage,” concluded Minister Bonnici.

Minister Byron Camilleri said that he is satisfied that Aġenzija Komunità Malta is investing again in the cultural heritage of our country, apart from the investments it is making in the Maltese and Gozitan communities.

“We did this project with the Patrijiet Kapuċċini in their church in Floriana, where now, not only has the church been restored to its original beauty, but an extensive holistic restoration of the building has also been done. We are committed to continue doing these types of projects through Aġenzija Komunità Malta, because in the end our community benefits,” concluded Minister Camilleri.

The works started during the provincial term of the former Provincial P. Effie Mallia, after the church was closed to the public because stones were falling from its front. He explained that the Patrijiet Kapuċċini had asked for help to repair these damages and the monks, with the help of government agencies, entered into this restoration project.

Also present for the inauguration was the CEO of the Malta Community Agency, Joe Mizzi, as well as the Mayor of Floriana, Vincent Borg. The investment in the restoration reaches €50,000.
