A Floriana resident was charged with attacking and injuring his partner after police forcibly entered the house and witnessed the scene.

The Malta Independent has reported that the 40-year-old, a father of two whose name is being kept anonymous due to a court order, had even subjected her to “unwanted and degrading” sexual advances.

Police inspector Eman Hayman told the court that police had received a report of shouts and sounds of a scuffle emanating from the couple’s house. They rushed to the scene to find the mother of the man’s victim locked outside, screaming to get in.

After forcing the door open, police later discovered the accused attacking the victim – naked – with a shard of glass, with Hayman explaining that the victim had already suffered wounds dealt with the weapon.

Footage from the arresting officers’ body cam was also presented to the court and was ‘self-explanatory’.

Defence lawyer Matthew Xuereb said that at the time, the accused was going through rough times, having two children and a business to run. Regardless, the court denied a request for bail in view of his criminal record.

“The accused was not making any sense at the time. He was using ’empty words’, the speech of a person who didn’t want to talk,” Hayman said.

Domestic violence is an issue that continuously plagues the country. Malta’s new specialised Domestic Violence Unit receives about five reports per day.
