Floriana’s Mayoral Seat Left Empty As PN and Independent Block PL’s Choice
Floriana remains without a mayor after councillors failed to reach a consensus today.
Although the PL won 43.64% of the Floriana vote compared to the PN’s 31.01%, both parties elected two councillors each. The fifth seat went to Nigel Holland, an independent councillor and former mayor who contested under the Floriana L-Ewwel banner.
In today’s meeting, the PL proposed their most popular councillor, Sandra Sammut Hili, as mayor. However, the PN’s councillors – James Aaron Ellul and Justine Palmer – as well as Nigel Holland voted against the nomination.
The PN didn’t nominate a mayor themselves, taking the stance that the PL, as the party with a relative majority, must reach a compromise itself.
