For First Time Ever, Malta To Update Contractor Licensing And Regulation Laws
Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced a new set of updated laws regarding construction contractor licensing and regulations in Malta.
Though details of what the update includes are not yet public, the new laws are set to be revealed in the coming days.
Speaking to journalists about the tragic death of 20-year-0ld JeanPaul Sofia, Abela said:
“If you ask me if more is needed in this sector, I’ll say yes – and that’s why yesterday cabinet approved a new batch of rules, among them those that cover licensing of contractors. This is the first time this ever happened in this sector.”

Abela went on to say that these updates were “long overdue”. He noted that current regulations have led to contractors receiving effective prison sentences over the last 20 years, though he didn’t specify in which cases.
Locally, contractors involved in controversial incidents – sometimes even leading to fatalities – oftentimes fail to be punished accordingly in court.
Just recently, a contractor involved in the death of Maltese mother Miriam Pace, Ludwig Dimech, was even pictured with Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia as they announced updates to a national project.
Do you think Malta’s construction sector needs more regulation?
