Following the recent refugee boat tragedy in Greece and the desperate situation in the Ukraine, the Foreign Minister Ian Borg has called for more substantial action.

“When it comes to irregular migration, we think that there is considerably more work to be done,” Borg said at yesterday’s General Affairs Council which finalised the preparations for the European Council taking place later this week.

The European Council will be discussing the ongoing situation in the Ukraine, and review progress on migration.

It will also address the EU’s economic security, and cover various external relations matters, including relations with China and the Southern Neighbourhood.

Borg highlighted the need to give the latter region the attention it deserves, and said that the package for Tunisia could be a great step forward and incredibly important.

On top of that, the Minister emphasised the significance of EU initiatives to boost competitiveness and economic resilience.

He urged for swift progress in reforming the pharmaceutical package to ensure fair access to medications for all EU citizens in every member state.

Regarding migration, Borg continued by saying:

“The external dimension of migration should remain a central part of our comprehensive approach to tackle the challenges of irregular migration. We need to engage with partners on a whole route approach and work resourcefully to prevent the loss of life, reduce primary movements and increase the rate of returns.”
