A forgotten war shelter was just discovered by the Mosta Local Council during ongoing construction works taking place in the locality.

The shelter was unearthed from beneath a rainwater grid situated along Triq il-Kostituzzjoni next to Ta’ Bormla shop, where it had been gathering rainwater for years.

“When we opened this grid, we discovered that there was a shelter. After going down a few stairs you will find a blocked shelter full of garbage and dirt,” the local council said on Facebook.

The council continued to explain how some time ago a rainwater channel had been opened so that the gathered rainwater from the street level is directed towards this shelter.

“As the Council, we have started to clean this shelter, while the Mayor has asked Infrastructure Malta that now that a rainwater system is being properly built in the street, this duct will be removed and rainwater will no longer be directed towards the shelter,” it said.

“Instead, this shelter will be cleaned. It may even be opened to the public on certain occasions.”

The locality of Mosta already has quite a large number of shelters, with the ones found under the Rotunda church often being open to the public.
