Former AD Leader Poses Four Key Questions To Three Left-Wing Parties

With two new left-wing parties set to join ADPD in Malta’s political landscape, former Greens leader Michael Briguglio has questioned how this new state of play will work in practice.

“I have no doubt that are strategic, ideological and personal reasons for this pluralism of small parties, and while I wish them well, I think some questions merit discussion,” Briguglio said.

These are the questions Briguglio put forward for discussion.

1. If these politicians can’t yet work together outside of Parliament, does this augur well for political stability in the eventuality that one of them gets elected?

2. If Arnold Cassola had left ADPD because he disagreed with their stance on abortion, is he ready to compromise as he did when he was secretary general of the European Greens and an MP with the Greens and Leftists in the Italian Parliament? In both cases, the pro-choice position was a central issue for the Greens and although Cassola didn’t agree with the stance, he didn’t leave the party.

3. How will the presence of these small parties impact the votes of PL and PN at the general election? Could it be that the difference in votes between the two parties will be influenced by the votes to these parties, even if they don’t manage to elect an MP?

4. Since ADPD forms part of the European Greens, which European groups will the Progressives and Cassola’s Momentum party be aligned to?

Under Briguglio’s watch, AD (now ADPD) won 5,506 votes at the 2013 election, which remains the best ever result for a third party in recent Maltese history. Back then, Cassola, who now plans to launch a new political party, and Silvan Agius, who is part of the Il-Progressivi group along with Cyrus Engerer, were both part of the AD leadership, as were ADPD incumbents Mario Mallia, Ralph Cassar and Carmel Cacopardo.

However, the left-wing group has now fractured and it now seems that the once-allies will now be competing against each other at the next election.

Will you consider voting for a third party at the next election?
