Former Juventus player Fabrizio Miccoli has been jailed for three years after being found guilty of aggravated extortion.

Miccoli made a name for himself playing for Palermo eventually earning himself a move to bigger clubs like Juventus and Fiorentina.

Later in his career, Miccoli even played for local side Birkirkara in 2015. He also earned 10 caps with the Italian national team.

The case dates back several years when Miccoli had commissioned an individual to collect €12,000 from his former business partner in a discotheque he owned.

The man was threatened on a number of occasions and also had violence used against him.

In handing down the sentence, the judge presiding over the case said it was reminiscent of the way the mafia worked.
