Former ONE Editor: Labourites Resorting To NET For Information On Vitals Case

Former ONE News editor Sandro Mangion has suggested that supporters of the Labour Party are being forced to get information about the ongoing Vitals case from the Nationalist Party’s NET TV given the lack of coverage other stations.

“During the last walk of the day with my dog yesterday, in an area considered to be dark red, I realised (due to the high-volume people keep their TV on) that many people were watching NET TV,” Mangion wrote in a Facebook post. “This shows there is a great thirst for informative programs and debate, because the other stations were only showing the usual programs”

Mangion went on to say that he could not understand how, in moments like this, it was only the Opposition’s media that was there to inform people. “For the national broadcaster, which is paid for from out taxes, this is supposed to be an obligation. For the PL’s station, this was a missed opportunity to give people an alternative view.”

Mangion’s comments come a day after former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, his chief of staff Keith Schembri, former Minister Konrad Mizzi along with several other professionals and past and present civil servants. While most of the country’s media covered the events outside court extensively, there was limited coverage by ONE and the national broadcaster.

Brikkuni frontman Mario Vella was quick to respond to Mangion’s post stressing that ONE would only have been able to offer a partisan view of proceedings while agreeing that the focus should be on the national broadcaster.

“OK but the emphasis should be on the national broadcaster which has been sabotaged by your colleagues,” Vella said, referring to the fact that many former ONE journalists today work for the national broadcaster, PBS. “This isn’t the time for subtleties Sandro come on. You can be better than that.”

He doubled down in a subsequent comment urging people in the Labour camp to “for once stick their neck out for the country”.

Former Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer also chimed in, noting that for the first time, NET News had surpassed ONE News in terms of viewership with a similar trend appearing with regards to discussion programs.

“Unfortunately, ONE News is these days only intended for the hardcore and those with a siege mentality. People don’t expect ONE and NET to be impartial and everyone is aware of their bias, but the childish level that newsroom  and the national broadcaster have fallen to is annoying many.”
