A 27-year-old policeman who quit the force today weeped in court as he pleaded not guilty to charges of raping and sexually harassing two of his former colleagues.

According to several media reports, the policeman raped one of his colleagues in the Msida police station where he was assigned, and sexually harassed another colleague inside a police car.  According to NET News, the two victims decided to report the constable to his superiors after finding out that they had gone through similar experiences.

The man’s name cannot be disclosed by court order, following a request by his lawyer Alfred Abela – who warned the publication of his personal details would make it difficult for the alleged victims to continue working in the police force.

He was in tears today as he told the court that he had resigned from the police force this morning and is currently unemployed.

The former constable was denied bail and is being held at Mount Carmel’s Forensic Ward. A protection order has been issued in favour of the two female officers.

The case is set to continue tomorrow, when the prosecution will summon the victims to testify against their alleged abuser.
