Former St Julian’s HSBC Branch Set To Become New 10-Storey Hotel
A former HSBC branch in St Julian’s has been earmarked for demolition following plans for a new 10-story hotel in the popular tourist area.
Located in St George’s Road, the building holds around 250 square meters in an attractive location just in front of Spinola Palace and only a minute’s walk away from Spinola Bay.
This building was one of a number of former Mid Med Bank branches designed by architect Richard England in the 1970s.
England’s well-respected work within the heritage community has been objected to the demolition by heritage activist and architect Edward Said, who called for the integration of parts of the building, such as the exterior, into the new hotel.
The application was sent in by Grahame Salt’s Berkeley Investments with the new design worked on by architect Ray Demicoli.
No part of the building is currently set to be preserved, according to MaltaToday.
The HSBC branch in St Julian’s was sold in 2019, following the bank’s announcement to close down eight branches by the end of the year.
