Fortina Ends TACA Contract, With Construction Workers Who Went On Strike After Not Being Paid For Five Months Being Sent Home

Fortina has ended its relationship with Taca Construction, with the construction workers who were striking after being left without pay for close to five months now losing their jobs.

The construction workers, who reportedly work 11-hour shifts, had gone on hunger strike yesterday. However, negotiations between Fortina and Taca broke down at the eleventh hour, according to Fortina. Taca construction was overseeing the rebuilding of the Fortina Hotel into a mixed-use development.

“We have done everything within our power to try and salvage the situation, but Taca’s failure to return its workers on site has left us with no alternative but to confirm our decision to terminate,” a spokesperson for the company said.

“We empathise with the Turkish workers and assure we have done our utmost to not only meet all our financial obligations with Taca Construction for the approved civil works undertaken to date, but we’ve paid over and above to facilitate matters,” they continued.

Fortina Contracting is holding Taca responsible for damages resulting from the delays in the project.

A new contractor will now take over the works.
