Four Fatalities And Fewer Crashes: Malta’s Road Accident Figures Drop In First Quarter Of 2025

Malta recorded four road traffic fatalities between January and March 2025, according to newly released figures, but overall road accidents and casualties have dropped compared to last year.

The fatalities involved three male drivers and one female pedestrian, and come as part of a wider picture showing a 9% drop in total traffic accidents and an 11.9% drop in injuries when compared to Q1 2024.

A total of 3,468 accidents were reported in the first three months of the year. The Northern Harbour district saw the most incidents, with 1,178 cases, while Birkirkara recorded the highest number in any single locality at 215 cases.

Grievous injuries were reported in 78 cases, affecting 42 drivers, 13 passengers and 23 pedestrians or cyclists.

The largest share of injuries occurred in the 26 to 40 age group, with men accounting for more than two-thirds of serious cases.

As for vehicle types, passenger cars were involved in over half of the casualties (51.9%), followed by motorcycles (31.6%). Meanwhile, three of the four fatalities involved a vehicle crashing into a property, and one pedestrian was fatally struck.

The day which recorded the most accidents was Friday, which saw 564 collisions, while Monday had the highest number of injuries.

The peak times for road accidents were between 9am and noon and again between 3pm and 6pm.
