‘Fr. Muscat’s Collar And Rosary Bead Won’t Cover Up His Prejudice’ Says Maltese MEP

Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola has launched stinging criticism of Fr. David Muscat’s comments on the country of origin and foreign-sounding name of one of the speaker’s at last weekend’s Victory Day celebrations.

“Fr Muscat can wear a collar & clutch a rosary bead as much as he likes, it won’t cover up the prejudice he spews as he addresses a sniggering gathering of Malta’s extreme right.”

“His putrid views are no reflection of Maltese society (or for that matter of any theological teaching),” Metsola wrote.

In an address in front of the Great Siege monument in Valletta, Fr Muscat said that Abdallah Kablan, a Maltese national, is not Maltese, and emphasised how foreign his name sounded when pronouncing it.

“All the country’s big shots came to the celebration all dressed up, but the main speech was given by Dr Abdallah Kablan, who isn’t even Maltese,” Muscat said in his speech.

“His ancestors fired bullets at your ancestors centuries ago, and everyone clapped for him. The worst part is that he’s a Barbary like them, the soldiers at the Great Siege weren’t only Turks but came from the Maghreb too,” he continued.

Kablan, the founder of the Delta Summit for emerging technologies, was born to non-Maltese parents, but he is Maltese and has lived here all his life.

He has since responded to Muscat’s speech, insisting that Muscat’s controversial comments were not representative of the entire Maltese population.

Many expressed their support for Kablan following the priest’s attack, with some sharing the hashtag #solidaritywithabdallakablan. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat even tweeted about his pride in choosing Kablan to deliver the speech.
