Franco Debono: ‘First Election In 11 Years I Felt Comfortable Openly Supporting PN’

Lawyer and former PN MP Franco Debono has praised the Nationalist Party after its surprising showing at yesterday’s European Parliament election.

“This is the first election since 2013 in which I felt comfortable openly supporting PN,” Debono said.

“Had I wanted to, I could have participated more but I had other commitments.”

He praised both PN leader Bernard Grech for “opening the party’s doos to everyone” and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola for being a “game-changer” and an “absolute protagonist”.

“Let’s respect the past and look to the future with a sense of unity and new hope.”

In another post, Debono warned that the Labour Party has “lost the electorate’s sympathy” and that it will be hard to regain it.

“Despite having three Gozitan ministers, the PL still lost Gozo,” he pointed out.

“Look at what happened to the PN when it lost the electorate’s sympathy because it had become arrogant. The PL is in the same situation but worse, due to other developments.”

“If someone has a complaint and you address it, you can win back them back. However, if you lose that person’s sympathy it will be tough to bring them back. Labour has lost the electorate’s sympathy because it was taken over by arrogance and the spirit of oppression, even among its own people.”

With the gap between PL and PN shrinking to 8,400 votes, Debono said that people will no longer feel that a vote for PN is a wasted vote.

“The electorate has woken up to a completely different reality. With such a small gap, a vote for PN isn’t a wasted vote. This is an important step forward, and will be the greatest change as a result of the vote. The road is long, and the party must be humble, keep its feet to the ground, and respect everyone, including its adversaries.”
