Franco Debono Makes Pitch To Return To PN: ‘You’ve Tried The Rest, Now Try The Best’

Franco Debono has strongly urged the Nationalist Party to invite him back to the party, suggesting he would be able to help turn its electoral misfortunes around.

After a MaltaToday survey confirmed a massive trust rating gap between Robert Abela and Bernard Grech, the former PN MP noted that the status quo hasn’t budged an inch since he left politics in 2012.

Debono said that while he has forgiven those who had criticised him over a holistic justice reform he had presented the Nationalist government some 12 years ago, many people are still aggrieved by the actions of the PN government.

“I believe the party must focus more energy on identifying and healing these wounds if it is to progress,” he said.

“The crusade against Vitals by Bernard Grech, Adrian Delia and Stephen Spiteri is extremely valid and they’re doing a lot of good work there, but the party must now dedicate the same amount of energy towards healing old wounds. Political wounds can take years to close for some.”

Debono said he wholly believes that the PN would have fared much better at the 2013, 2017 and 2022 general elections if it had listened to him and allowed him to work, citing surveys he had commissioned which indicate a high level of public support for him.

“The PN can continue ignoring this reality at its own peril,” he said.

“Many people believe that the PN will never recover before I’m allowed to work,” he said. “This isn’t my opinion, but the opinion of many people who speak to me on a daily basis. I have been waiting for months to write this. As has been written on ice-cream vans, you’ve tried the rest, now try the best.”
