Franco Debono Says He’s ‘Pleased’ With Beppe Fenech Adami’s Relationship With Ian Borg

Amid a driver’s license racket revelation, more information has come to the surface about those who benefitted from calls and complaints to the former transport minister or to the OPM’s customer care.

One somewhat surprising claim is that PN MP Beppe Fenech Adami was granted this aid by former Transport Minister and current Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg, after a phone call complaining about his son’s failure to pass the practical driver’s test.

While some Maltese figures were outraged at Borg’s reported misuse of power, lawyer and former PN MP Franco Debono expressed his happiness at seeing the two ministers from opposing parties get along.

“I am pleased to hear that my friend Beppe Fenech Adami spoke with Ian Borg regarding a problem where his son failed his driving test once or twice,” Debono wrote on social media.

“Why am I pleased? It means that the PN no longer look at Labour as if they have the plague or that they are people of the second division, people who you cross the road whenever you see them – because that was the situation when I was in Parliament.”

Debono went on to explain that during his time as an MP, one couldn’t speak with labor about the smallest things because they would be called a liar or a traitor.

“This was a militant situation.”

He went on to say that those who, “like Beppe, vented to customer care did nothing wrong within the parameters of the law.”

“It is right to leave behind militancy and live as Maltese brothers with different opinions. Like Beppe, I am a member of the Nationalist party, and also like Beppe I have respect for Ian Borg.”

“For the Nationalist Party, PN shouldn’t be the enemy it hates, but the political opponent it respects for the opposition to become the winner again.”

This comes a day after the Times of Malta revealed a driver’s license racket wherein the Transport Ministry allegedly placed pressure on Transport Malta (TM) to help candidates obtain driving licenses. WhatsApp chats acquired by the Times of Malta even reportedly show OPM officials connecting the practice to wanting to win votes.

More chats revealed Borg, his canvasser, and his ministry regularly applying pressure on TM’s director of licensing Clint Mansueto to help candidates with their tests, some of whom came from Borg’s electoral districts.

Since this alleged scheme was shared, politicians and activists had different takes, with some urging for the resignation of Borg, and others; namely Prime Minister Robert Abela, insisting that the minister was just doing his job by helping people.
Borg released a similar statement defending his actions.
