From St Aloysius To Las Vegas, Maltese DJ Jonah’s Music Is Taking Him To South Korea’s Ultra Festival

Back in 2017, a young Marsaskala boy with big dreams knew he needed to take his music career to the next level.

After studying at St Aloysius College in Birkirkara and studying law at the University of Malta, Jonah Vella left the island and started DJing in America.

Within a few years, he’s already played shows with some of the biggest names in EDM and electronic music in the USA scene – and he’s now preparing for his festival debut, at the major Ultra Korea.

Ahead of the big show, Lovin Malta spoke to the upcoming Maltese DJ hard at work in Las Vegas.

“I’ve been playing a lot of my unreleased music in my sets. It’s such an amazing feeling seeing people go crazy and party to music that I made.”

Working on getting his own original tracks into rotation, his latest release – a remix of Faouzia’s record ‘Anybody Else’ released on Atlantic Records – has already received “super positive” feedback.

“The lyrics are very deep, and I gave it a festival spin, so it’s great seeing her fans support it.”

When it comes to his parties, teaming up with his DJ/Producer buddies has been a mainstay of his trajectory.

“One of my favourite moments so far has got to be playing my first Vegas show at Zouk Nightclub with Zedd on New Year’s Eve. A lot of my friends were able to fly in for the show, and my dad also flew in from Malta for it.”

“Playing in front of over 3,000 people in Vegas was an amazing experience, but seeing all my friends and family having the time of their life made it a very very special moment.”

“It’s always so fun when my artist friends show up to the show and come up on stage to perform one of their songs with me. A lot of times it’s random, and it’s always a great moment in the show.”

With his latest release gaining traction and Jonah working on preparing his set for his Korean debut, the Marsaskala boy can still barely believe that it’s all real.

“To have Ultra Music Festival as my first music festival performance is still so surreal. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Seoul, and I’m excited and so grateful for this opportunity – I’m stoked for it!”
