Game’s Up For Scammers Who Knocked On Maltese Doors To Request Bogus Charity Donations
Two Romanian men have been arrested and charged for scamming people by requesting donations for a fake disability charity.
Adrian Ene, 25, and Leonard Tanas, 29, neither of whom live in Malta, were arrested after knocking on people’s doors in localities such as Ħal Għaxaq, St Paul’s Bay and Birżebbuġa and showing them an extremely dodgy clipboard.
Written in broken Maltese, perhaps through Google Translate, the clipboard asked people for donations to “The National Association For Children With A Disability And Deaf-Mute”, an organisation which doesn’t exist.
It also includes a reversed Maltese flag and a logo of the global NGO Handicap International.
The scam went viral this weekend after Ħal Għaxaq local council candidate Christine Dalli took a picture of one of the men who knocked on her door and shared it to social media.
The police arrested them and charged them with scamming people and with leading an idle and vagrant life. They pleaded not guilty but have been remanded in custody after having not requested bail.
