ĠENN’s New Single ‘Calypso’ Brings Maltese Rhythms To Forefront Ahead Of Debut Album ‘Unum’
Maltese artists based in Brighton, ĠENN, are introducing their new single, ‘Calypso,’offering fans a preview of their debut album, ‘unum,’ slated for release on October 6th via Liminal Collective.
With dreamy guitar riffs and resonating sax lines, ‘Calypso’ provides an ethereal atmosphere, a tribute to the band’s Mediterranean heritage.
Janelle Borg, the band’s guitarist, explains that the track originated from a personal reinterpretation of Maltese folk music ‘għana.’ Beyond the music, the lyrics pay homage to influential Maltese author and playwright, Mario Azzopardi, adding another layer of cultural depth to the piece.
ĠENN, formed a decade ago, consists of Maltese nationals and a drummer of Jamaican-Portuguese descent.
Known for their commentary on race, nationality, and art in the post-Brexit landscape, the band uses their unique position as Commonwealth migrants operating in the UK to address societal and political issues.
The band’s self-reliance is evident through the establishment of the Liminal Collective, through which they release their music.
Their debut album, ‘unum,’ co-produced by Gilla Band’s Dan Fox and Tom Hill, follows their well-received releases like ‘A Reprise (That Girl),’ ‘Days And Nights,’ and ‘Rohmeresse.’ The band is set for several performances in the UK and internationally in Germany and Luxembourg, paving the way for an exciting debut release.
ĠENN, supported by the Arts Council Malta, are Leona Farrugia (vocals), Sofia Rosa Cooper (drums), Janelle Borg (guitars), and Leanne Zammit (bass).
