George Degiorgio Confesses To Daphne Murder: ‘I Will Not Go Down Alone’
George Degiorgio has confessed to his role in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in an interview.
Speaking to Reuters in an interview from prison, Degiorgio said the murder was “just business” insisting that he and his brother Alfred “would not go down alone”.
“If I knew, I would have gone for 10 million. Not €150,000,” he said, “For me it was just business. Yeah. Business as usual!”
Degiorgio said he would plead guilty during the trial, saying that he will talk to the magistrate to provide testimony to reveal information on other people involved in the murder.
The brothers have requested pardons in order to reveal the identity of an as-yet-unidentified mastermind in the murder, who they claim to have been a sitting minister at the time. They also claim they are ready to provide information on crimes relating to aggravated theft and homicide, by naming two masterminds.
However, these requests have been routinely denied.
In the interview, Degiorgio said he was willing to testify that a major Maltese political tried to plan an assassination of Daphne two years before her murder
Caruana Galizia was murdered by a car bomb on 16th October 2017. One of the hitmen, Vince Muscat has already pleaded guilty and given testimony in the case. Yorgen Fenech, the alleged mastermind, is currently awaiting trial and has long claimed that others were involved in the murder, notably Keith Schembri.
Former minister Chris Cardona has also faced accusations of potential involvement in testimonies from state witness Melvin Theuma.
