A man who owns fields impacted by the wildfire that broke out near Għasri, Gozo on Sunday has shared images showing the damage and desolation caused by the blaze.

The fire, which occurred in the area of Triq il-Fanal near Ta’ Ġurdan Hill, limits of Għasri, left swathes of land burnt to a crisp – and one man, who asked to remain anonymous, shared the extent of the damage.

“I estimate the damage is around €6,000,” he told Lovin Malta. “Some of my trees also got burned.”

The man, who says he uses the area for hunting, was at a loss as to what to do next.

“When I first saw what happened, I felt like the world was falling on me, and there was nothing I could do.”

The first was just one of a multitude of fires that broke out over the last week, including in Mġarr Bay, a Swieqi valley, and as a result of a fireworks factory exploding in Dwejra, Malta.

A key issue raising its head is the challenges emergency fighters face in accessing hard-to-reach fields and areas. One local volunteer fire-fighting group, the St John’s Rescue Corps, are hoping to invest in specialised vehicles to take on this challenge.
