Global LGBTIQ Politicians Convene In Maltese Parliament As A Beacon Of Inclusion And Equality
Scores of LGBTIQ parliamentarians and politicians gathered in Malta’s Parliament today for an open discussion on equality through leadershp and representation.
This conference featured the participation of numerous Members of Parliament from various countries in Africa, the Americas, and Europe, including Petra De Sutter, Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium and Marc Angel, Vice-President of the European Parliament.
Maltese Members of the Maltese Parliament, including Graziella Attard Previ, Claudette Buttigieg, Randolph Debattista, and Katya De Giovanni were also in attendance.
This conference was organised in collaboration with the Office of MEP Cyrus Engerer, along with Politicians for Global Action and the Global Equality Caucus, and led my MP David Agius.
During his address, Engerer admitted he was “very emotional right now” seeing equal representation in Malta’s highest political forum.
“Today, walking into Malta’s highest institution, together with colleagues, parliamentarians from across the world who identify as LGBTIQ, and with some others who have done outstanding work for the LGBTIQ community, I couldn’t but feel a sense of Pride, because through this event, which I thank you for cohosting, we are giving hope to thousands of children and teenagers across the world,” Engerer said.
“We’re telling them that they are not alone. We are telling them that if they feel they are different, they should not be apologetic about it.”
During MP Randolph De Battista’s address, he said that today was his “favourite” day in Parliament, and referred to the eye-opening documentary Who I Am Not, which had it’s Malta premiere this week during EuroPride – and which saw the protagonists, who are from South Africa, praise Malta for being a place they feel safe to hold hand in the streets in.
Did you ever expect to see such representation in Malta’s parliament?
