‘Gone But Never Forgotten’, Partit Demokratiku Call For A Monument To Be Built In Memory Of All Those Who Died In Both World Wars
Amidst the Santa Marija celebrations, Malta’s Partit Demokratiku is calling for a comprehensive monument to be built to commemorate all Maltese killed in both world wars.
August 15th is an important date in Maltese history as it marks the day Malta was saved from the brink of starvation by a British convoy during World War II.
In light of this, the Partit Demokratiku have called for a comprehensive monument to be erected with the names of all Maltese who died in both world wars.
“While there are monuments documenting the Maltese killed in the Second World War across our towns and villages, there is no list for the 800 or so dead from the First World War. They are not any less important,” said Hon Dr. Godfrey Farrugia.
“Total collective casualties from both wars reach just under 3000 names. Our heritage comes in many forms, and the memory of the Maltese who gave their lives in these conflicts should not be forgotten,” said Timothy Alden.
The Partit Demokratiku hope that they can preserve the memory of the war efforts by recording all names on a monument in public.
“Europe, and indeed the world, would be a very different place today without the many sacrifices made by Malta and her allies,” they said in a press release.
