Government Will Soon Try Limit Our Car Use To Pay For Its Bad Planning, Says Nationalist Party

The Nationalist Party has warned that the government could soon propose “drastic measures” to reduce cars on the roads at the detriment of drivers.

Transport spokesman Toni Bezzina said the government was continuing to grow the economy by increasing population, to the point that Malta had the largest population growth in the entire EU.

“Media reports are now indicating that the government could soon start considering drastic measures to reduce the use of private vehicles in the roads. This will mean that drivers will end up suffering as a result of the government’s decision to keep bringing thousands of foreigners each year many of whom are having to use private cars because they don’t have faith in public transport.”

Bezzina warned that Malta’s population had almost reached half a million and one in every seven people in Malta were foreign. Meanwhile, Maltese roads have to accommodate almost 400,000 cars, with a 3.3% increase since last year.

“It is within this context that studies reaching government are suggesting that instead of a strong investment in alternative mass transport, drivers will soon start losing their licenses or limits will be placed on the number of cars on the road.

“In other words, Maltese and Gozitan drivers are going to start paying for the government’s policy to keep increasing the population as well as the disastrous public transport system.”

Bezzina said it was clear that the increased number of private cars means people are not well served by public transport, despite the €30 million subsidies given out each year to the bus company.

That’s why the Opposition believes the government should invest in a mass transport system that is efficient, punctual, effective and eco-friendly so that people will not have to rely on private cars.
