Prime Minister Robert Abela has pledged to delay pushing through with major media reform so that a proper consultation process can happen over the bills.

It will still be presented at the first stage, but said that the government will not move forward until it receives feedback from the committee following the consultation process.

Judge Michael Mallia who chairs the Committee of Experts will lead the consultation.

The reform has been controversial given that it failed to consult with key stakeholders in the industry.

Meanwhile, lawyer Therese Comodini Cachia has claimed that the government rejected the committee’s “most significant proposals”, which include the state providing an enabling environment for journalists, the right to seek access to information, and protection against SLAPP suits.
