Gozitan MEP: Tunnel To Malta Still Needed Despite Fourth Ferry’s Success
Gozitan MEP Josianne Cutajar has argued that a tunnel between Gozo and Malta is still necessary, despite the success of a fourth ferry in slashing waiting times.
“While the introduction of the fourth ferry has improved travelling times during the high season, it does not render other solutions any less important,” Cutajar, a PL MEP, told Lovin Malta. “In fact, work is ongoing on a healthy mix of different measures, including a fast ferry service, a new helicopter service, and a permanent link. This is all part of the Government’s vision for Gozo which I definitely share.”
“This project will lead to an improvement in the quality of life and wellbeing of all who are required to travel in between the islands for health, work and study reasons, and will attract more private investment to Gozo, increasing the availability of quality jobs in Gozo, more efficiency and better services.”
“We are duty bound to take note of this position, and of Parliamentary unanimity on the need for the project. Since then, the process continued as planned to ensure a better connection, through sensible and well-studied plans.”
The vision for the proposed tunnel, which would link Nadur to the hamlet of L-Imbordin, was approved by both Labour and PN in a parliamentary debate earlier this year. However, Opposition leader Adrian Delia later said he has significant environmental concerns and will wait until studies are concluded before taking a stance on the project.
Debate on the tunnel sprung up again following the success of the fourth ferry, with the President of the Gozo Tourism Association and the Association of Gozitan Employees in Malta both questioning the necessity of a permanent link.
