Gozitans No Longer Feel Safe Leaving Their Key In The Front Door, PN MP Alex Borg Warns
Warning that Gozo has developed into a more dangerous island, PN MP Alex Borg has urged the authorities to enforce the law with an “iron fist”.
Addressing a political activity in Sannat, Borg said that Gozitans used to live a peaceful life until a few years ago and would feel lucky when they would hear Maltese people nostalgically talking about the days they used to feel safe enough to leave their key in the front door.
“We used to feel that we could still do that, however many Gozitans now feel that this has been stolen from them due to a rise of crime and a lack of security.”
Borg dismissed recent raids on irregular migrants across Malta as a means for the authorities to “pretend they’re doing something” and predicted it will all fizzle out in a few weeks’ time.
“This isn’t serious enforcement, the government must ensure people can live in peace and come down with an iron fist over people who come to Malta to cause trouble and endanger our security,” he said.
“We need to show we mean business. If you come to Malta to work and act properly, you should be welcomed and receive all the shelter and benefits that the Maltese are entitled to, but if you come here to cause trouble then you don’t belong here.”
Borg also urged the authorities to come down hard on Maltese “untouchables” who feel they are above the law because they have close relationships with people in power.
“If you are close to power and have an arrest warrant issued against you, you are allowed to go on holiday while the authorities act tough with the people at the bottom,’ he said, referring to the recent Iosif Galea case.
“This isn’t the service we deserve when we pay our taxes and we can’t keep hearing more excuses or witness more dragging of feet. We can’t have so many shuttered police stations and so few police officers on the streets.”
“We will keep pressuring and won’t stop until we get back our peace of mind, with no zones that we can barely visit, and until our children can play in the streets and our elderly can live in peace.”
Next Sunday, the PN will hold a protest in Valletta against the government’s “theft of our quality of life”.
