Gozo Losing Charm Due To Over Development, Industry Leaders Warn

Every single member of the Gozo Tourism Association believes that the island is losing its charm and characteristics due to overdevelopment. 

In an online survey among its members, 100% of respondents agreed with that statement, with a further 91% said that overdevelopment will deter both foreign and local tourists from visiting Gozo. 

Respondents ranged from hospitality, accommodation, restaurants, diving centres, tourist attractions, transport, tour operations, travel agents, real state agencies and tourism consultancy firms. 

A majority of them had significant concerns for the current tourism product, with 81% saying that unfinished projects are giving a shabby look to the destination.

Almost 62% said that the islands need a general clean-up, recommending as well continuous maintenance of public places, playing fields, public gardens and green areas.

Meanwhile,e more than half said their places needed to be renovated. However, almost 95% said that they are unable to do so because of a lack of finances.

When it came to expenses brought on by inflation, the respondents said their wage bills (70%), repairs (58%) and food costs (48%) have increased. Almost 65% had to adjust their selling prices and rates to cover these increases.

Staff shortages are also a problem in Gozo, with many flagging employment in the public sector (66%) a major concern while 64% called for favourable tax incentives. Almost 55% said that the fast-tracking for work permits and vis applications would help.
