A grandmother who yesterday attacked the headmistress of a Birgu primary school inside her own office has been punished with a €4,000 fine and a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

The woman, who cannot be named by court order, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and disturbing the peace, formally apologised to the headmistress and said she “is aware she made a mistake”.

Besides the punishment, magistrate Monika Vella also placed the grandmother under a restraining order and ordered her to stay away from the St Margaret Primary School.

Identifying herself as the grandmother of a student, the accused entered the school yesterday morning and requested a meeting with the headmistress. As soon as the woman entered the office, she attacked the headmistress and allegedly pulled her hair. The headmistress had to be taken to hospital for treatment but has since been discharged.

“The woman was let into the headmistress’ office, where the assistant headmistress was also present,” the ministry said. “As soon as she entered the office, she physically attacked the headmistress. Staff had to intervene and escort this person out of the school.”
