Group Of Companies In Malta Become First To Introduce Paid Period Leave
A group of companies in Malta has introduced menstrual leave to all its female employees in honour of International Women’s Day.
The new policy unveiled by WFDM Holdings, a group of companies focused on recruitment, marketing, and property, will provide paid leave for up to twelve days every year, for those who experience “painful and difficult” periods that impact their ability to perform.
This, WFDM said, does not take away from their sick or vacation time, but a chance for them to take care of their menstrual health without comprising their work.
“We recognise that menstruation is a normal and natural part of life, and for some women, it can be a challenging and painful experience,” said Matthew Mantvydas Narusevicius, CEO of WFDM.
“We believe that by introducing menstrual leave, we are sending a message to our female employees that we support them and care about their overall wellbeing. This is just one of the many steps we are taking to ensure that WFDM remains an inclusive and supportive workplace for women.”
Spain paved the way for period pain leave in February, becoming the first country to introduce the measure in the EU.
PL MP Rosianne Cutajar, who introduced the idea to Malta last month, congratulated the move.
“I will continue to strive to put the concept of menstrual leave on the national agenda, and in the meantime, I congratulate WFDM and encourage other companies to follow the example,” she wrote.
