Guest Post: Plastic Surgery Is A Must For Many Within Malta’s LGBTIQ+ Community
Why plastic surgery? And what does it have to do with the LGBTIQ+ community?
There is a mistaken mentality and several misconceptions surrounding plastic surgery. For many, there is a general feeling that anyone undergoing plastic surgery is doing it for vanity, just to look cool or just to look better than anybody else.
But the truth is, plastic surgery is a must for most people, either due to medical conditions, accidents or to genuinely feel good about themselves.
In my case as a transgender woman, plastic surgery helped me become who I am and who I believed I was since my childhood.
“I always knew that I was a woman and that I am trapped in the wrong body ever since I was a little child.”
The way forward for me was clear: gender reassignment surgery. I underwent the surgery in the UK in 2006, as well as breast implants – and this has helped me become who I am today.
Unfortunately, the surgery came with a price, and it wasn’t just money. Due to a complication, one of my kidneys stopped functioning.
So when I, or other trans people, post pictures wearing a bikini or a swimsuit, it isn’t meant as competition with anyone – but merely a celebration of who I am.
A celebration of who I became after an uphill struggle when I can finally celebrate life.
On the occasion of Pride Month that my fellow members within the LGBTIQ community will be celebrating, I encourage every person to be herself, himself, or whatever they want to be and celebrate life.
Be proud of who you are. Take pictures – do surgery, or don’t do surgery, as long as you are happy.
Always be yourself – and most importantly, don’t judge.
