Ħal Far Company Becomes First To Export Malta-Produced Medical Cannabis To Germany
A Maltese company has become the first local producer to export medical cannabis into a foreign market – in this case, Germany.
Materia Malta, which has a factory in Ħal Far, will now have products for sale in another country’s open market. Pre-orders from German pharmacy customers are now expected to be fulfilled in the coming days.
“Our products are already helping patients in Malta improve their quality of life, and now we can support the needs of patients in Germany too,” said Nick Pateras, Managing Director, Europe of Materia.
“We believe Malta will play an important role in the global cannabis supply chain, as it has done within the broader pharmaceuticals sector for decades. We are proud to be the company establishing new frontiers for Malta’s and Europe’s cannabis industry.”
Materia’s Ħal Far facility has an annual capacity of 6,000kg, with a potential sale value of €36 million based on a blended average sales price across several key European markets.
Speaking to Lovin Malta in September, the company had celebrated becoming fully licensed, with big plans to begin exporting abroad.
Gaining access to the German market means Materia have now accessed the largest medical cannabis market in Europe.
While other countries had previously been approved for Research and Development purposes, or lab testing purposes, Materia is the first to access the open market, something they intend to build on in the coming months and years.
