Safi’s St Mary Chapel Given A Fresh Feel Thanks To Restoration Works
St Mary Chapel has been restored to its former glory thanks extensive works undertaken by the Restoration Directive with an investment of €100,000.
The chapel dedicated to Saint Mary was built in 1761 by Architect Angelo Bonnici, and is found in the heart of Safi. It forms part of the project chosen by the Local Council’s Restoration Scheme and is one of 40 chapels participating in this initiative.
Workers of the Restoration Directorate were thanked for their work in favour of historical buildings by Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici
“Projects like this continue to clearly show the Government’s commitment to the cultural heritage in our localities. These areas should be accessible for everyone, so we can continue preserving the historical, cultural and intangible heritage they contain” he said.
“I encourage more Local Councils to submit their applications for the Local Council Restoration Scheme to preserve and safeguard Maltese Cultural Heritage while strengthening the value of our localities in order to continue attracting more tourists, both local and foreign” Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli said.
The Restoration Directorate is responsible for managing the entire project starting from site documentation, to planning permit applications, to subsequent site works.
The restoration works mainly focused on cleaning the main façade, side elevation, roof and dome from biological growth and opening defective joints.
Then workers replaced deteriorated stone and finished it off with a lime injection
The next step was to remove the existing zokklatura and cement renders and replace them with a breathable render, close off cracks to stop water infiltration, and the final step was to upgrade the deffun roof and dome and structural consolidation of the main doorway.
