Half Of Malta Will Soon Receive A Government Cheque, Prime Minister Announces

Around 250,000 people, equivalent to half of the Maltese population, will receive a government cheque with tax refunds in the coming days, Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced.
“As of tomorrow, you will find a tax refund cheque in your letterboxes for the fourth consecutive year,” Abela told a pre-budget public consultation session last night, confirming it will cost the government around €17 million.
Although he didn’t specify who will be eligible for this tax refund, previous iterations of the scheme have seen cheques posted to people earning less than €60,000 annually.
The Prime Minister’s announcement came on the same day as Opposition leader Bernard Grech pledged to double the income ceiling at which businesses and service providers will have to pay VAT from €30,000 to €60,000.
